More than 500 Year 7 students and teachers from local schools visited the Central Teaching Labs as part of British Science Week.
Pupils from Mosslands School, Enterprise South Liverpool Academy and Alsop High School took part in a series of science activities organised by members of the Educational Opportunities Team, the School of Physical Science Outreach Officer, and student and staff volunteers from Physics, Geology and Chemistry.
Promoting science-related teaching and learning
The events were used to promote science-related teaching and learning which takes place in higher education, and the range of courses and careers that exist in this area.
Students were able to attend workshops based on ‘The Science of Flight’, ‘The Science of Space’ and ‘The Science of Levitation’ , all developed and delivered by academics from the University. The students also attended a large interactive ‘Science Is Cool’ session, to experience the ‘large lecture’ teaching style of University, and to see the facilities firsthand.
Throughout the day the young people were working with current undergraduate students from a range of subjects, giving them the opportunity to ask questions about higher education, and see role models who may have had the same fears about University just a few years before.
