A delegation from Mahidol University in Thailand has visited the University to see the facilities on campus and to meet with staff.
The President of the Mahidol University, Clinical Professor Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, and the current Dean of Science, Professor Skorn Mongkolsuk, brought the group which included Professor Emorn Wasantwisut, Vice President for International Relations.
The delegation had discussions with several research leaders from the three Faculties as well as meetings with Executive Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Stephen Holloway and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Internationalisation, Professor Michael Hoey.
They also met with the Vice-Chancellor who reiterated his strong support for an international graduate programme where research students and staff from different major research institutions come together to address major global challenges.
Last year the Mahidol-Liverpool Stang Mongkolsuk PhD Scholarship was set up to honour the scientific leadership of the late Professor Stang Mongkolsuk, who graduated from Liverpool before becoming the Founding Dean of the Faculty of Science of the Mahidol University.
The first Stang Mongkolsuk scholar, Mr Sitthivut Charoensutthivarakul, selected by a joint panel from Liverpool and Mahidol Universities, arrived in October last year and is working with Professor Paul O’Neil on a cross-disciplinary Medicinal Chemistry project on malaria.
