Students arriving at the University of Liverpool in September are set to benefit from a varied programme of events on campus and in the city, from music and comedy, to arts and sport.
Here is a selection of what is happening at the University and in the city for the start of a new academic year:
Guild
The Liverpool Guild of Students opens its newly-refurbished building with a host of acts, bands, comedians and DJs to kick-start Welcome Week. The Welcome Week Ball will feature DJ Fresh, who has collaborated with Rita Ora and Miss Dynamite, Fuse ODG and Radio 1’s Huw Stevens.
Also performing at Welcome Week will be DJ Kristian Nairn, better known as Hodor in Game of Thrones. He will be behind the decks at the Headphone disco and UV rave.

Music
The city has an unrivalled musical heritage with many well-known and up-and-coming artists playing in both the city’s large and small venues.
Jake Bugg will be playing the Echo Arena in October along with the Vamps and the Kaiser Chiefs, who begin their world tour in Liverpool in January.
There are a number of smaller music venues in the city which showcase unsigned artists including the quirky Kazimer , the O2 Academy and the Shipping Forecast.
Liverpool Music Week – the UK’s largest indoor winter music festival – takes place at the end of October playing host to more than 250 live acts including Mogwai, Wild Beasts, and Chvrches Forest Swords, at venues across the city.
Clubs
As the birthplace of Cream, there are plenty of club nights in Liverpool to delight clubbers across the spectrum from house, techno to warehouse clubs, comedy clubs and LGBT clubs.
The historic Baltic Triangle is the city’s new creative and digital district which is home to recording studios, restaurants and bars as well as internationally acclaimed arts festivals and galleries.
The area has been recognised by the city’s club promoters, taking advantage of the warehouse spaces to stage some of Liverpool’s most popular club nights at venues such as HAUS and Kitchen Street pop-up.
Sport
Liverpool has a worldwide historic reputation as a city of football, with Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs, but September sees `Le Grand Depart’ for UK’s largest cycle race– the Tour of Britain – which will feature some of the world’s top cyclists finishing along the city’s waterfront.
Art and theatre
The city has the largest collection of museums and galleries anywhere outside of the Capital. An exhibition exploring Andy Warhol’s experiments with mass-produced imagery opens at Tate Liverpool in November.
Next summer, Tate Liverpool will also host an exhibition by one of the most influential and provocative American artists of the 20th century, Jackson Pollock, whose work has made a major contribution to abstract art.
The newly refurbished Everyman Theatre will play host to comedians Ruby Wax and Mark Thomas as well as Sean O’Casey’s Juno and the Paycock starring Niamh Cusack. The Everyman Theatre on Hope Street is nominated for the RIBA Stirling Prize – the Oscars of the architecture world – and they will find out if they have won this accolade in October.
Comedy
As a city famous for its humour, there are plenty of opportunities to see a number of big name comedians perform in the next few months from Liverpool’s very own John Bishop to Ross Noble, Graham Norton and Dave Gorman. There is a thriving comedy scene in the city with many bars, clubs and theatres hosting regular comedy nights including Comedy Central Club, Laughterhouse and The Liverpool Comedy Cellar.
