Pavilion Poetry, the imprint launched by University of Liverpool and Liverpool University Press (LUP), launched its latest works following an impressive inaugural year.
Poets, Sarah Westcott and Ruby Robinson join Eleanor Rees, Sarah Corbett and Mona Arshi in the Pavilion stable, with their collections Slant Light and Every Little Sound.
The launch of these two new titles follows a hugely successful first year for Pavilion, which saw Mona Arshi’s Small Hands pick up the prestigious Forward Prize for Best First Collection, against stiff competition.
“Moving and original”
Sheffield-born Ruby Robinson’s work is described as “moving and original”, inviting the reader “to listen carefully and use ideas of hearing and listening to explore the legacies of trauma”.
Ruby said: “It’s been such a pleasure working on the publication of my debut collection. The positivity of everyone in the Pavilion Poetry team has meant so much to me and I will always treasure my relationship with the imprint and with the beautiful city of Liverpool.”
Journalist, Sarah Westcott’s Slant Light draws heavily on her love of the natural world, and is described as “teeming with detail” and “alive to the beautiful in the commonplace”.
Sarah said: “I am delighted to have found a perfect home for my first poetry collection; I couldn’t have asked for a better experience at Pavilion Poetry, from first edits, to final cover choices, and I am proud to be part of this exciting new press. I look forward to watching the list going from strength to strength over the years ahead.”
A joint venture by the University and LUP, Pavilion Poetry’s Series Editor is established poet, Professor Deryn Rees-Jones. Students also play a central role in the publishing process, from typesetting to proof-reading and marketing.
Professor Rees-Jones, from the University’s School of the Arts, said: “I am very happy to see Pavilion evolving as a home to a community of writers who produce challenging and important work with an international reach. The students who worked this year to bring the books to press have shown great dedication and professionalism, of which they should be rightly proud.”
“Insightful collections”
Alison Welsby, Editorial Director at LUP said: “Liverpool University Press is delighted to publish these two new insightful collections that offer moving reflections on nature, relationships and life.”
“The students who have worked alongside publishing professionals to bring these collections to print – Connor, Toni and Wilson – have been exceptional and we are immensely proud of Pavilion Poetry and our partnership with the School of Arts.”
The two new titles were launched at a special event held in the University’s School of the Arts Library. Both are available to purchase direct from LUP, please visit liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/collections/series-pavilion-poetry for more information.
