As part of this year’s Policy Provocations series the Heseltine Institute is hosting a debate on Artificial Intelligence.
Stephen Hawking stated that “the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” This has provoked a spirited reaction from computer scientists who were unable to reach a consensus on whether it would indeed be possible to build a machine that outperformed humanity to such an extent that we created a life-form that could render ourselves obsolete or even extinct.
Chaired by Dr Roger Phillips of BBC Radio Merseyside, the expert panel promises to hold a lively and engaging debate. Roger will be joined by the University’s own Professor Simon Maskell from the School of Electrical Engineering, Joanna Bryson from the University of Bath, Keith Hitchman from Organisation River in the City, and Sir Robin Saxby, former CEO and chairman of ARM Holdings.
