Event: Fat Activism – A Public Conversation

Liverpool Social Scientist, Dr Bethan Evans, is joining forces with DaDaFest to host an event that explores the intersections between fat activism and disability activism.

The event, ‘Fat Activism: A Public Conversation’, is part of the DaDaFest International Festival. It featuers a duo of conversations.

The first Fat and Crip Power! A Public Conversationwith disability activist Liz Carr and fat activist Charlotte Cooper will explore the overlaps, shared experiences and differences between fat activism and disability activism.

The second Flying while Fat/Disabled’ with Stacy Bias and Bethan Evans is based on research on flying while fat which explores people’s experiences of air travel and raises some questions about the relationship between disability and fat activism when it comes to making a case for accessible transport.

It will also feature an animation by Stacy Bias, based on this research, which presents the voices of fat passengers.

Dr Evans said: “Flying can be uncomfortable for many people but particularly so for people whose bodies aren’t accommodated by the physical infrastructure of the plane. This is often made worse by hostile reactions from other passengers, and legislation covering this issue varies across the world. This event will highlight the issues people face in the context of inaccessible air travel. We hope that this conversation and the animation will go some way to encouraging less hostile reactions from fellow passengers.”

Fat Activism: A Public Conversation takes place at the Unity Theatre on Saturday, 19 November at 11am – 2pm.  The event is free but please book by visiting this webpage:
