Sports teams from our University and Liverpool John Moores University have been battling it out this week in the annual Varsity competition and, after a tough tournament, the University of Liverpool took the Varsity title once again.
The overall Varsity score was 89 – 59. This latest wins means that the University has won Varsity consecutively for six years.
A particular highlight of this year’s tournament was the American Football game. Despite the fact the team was only set up three years ago, The Raptors – our American Football Team – beat LJMU’s American Football Team, Fury. This is the first time The Raptors have beaten Fury.
Our Men’s First Football Team beat LJMU 2 – 1. LJMU had been firm favourites going into the competition, having just won their 1A BUCs league.
Another gripping game was the Men’s Basketball event. With just two minutes and 20 seconds left in the match the score between these two talented teams stood at 64 – 64. Our team managed to triumph however, after a stunning run of nine points, to LJMU’s two, leaving the final score 73 – 66.
Tom Milner, AU President, commented on the win, saying: “After what’s been a great week, it’s brilliant to continue the trend of Varsity success! Congratulations to all who took part, and here’s to repeating the feat at Christie.”
Gillian Higgins, Assistant Sport Development Officer, said: “I can safely say it has truly been the best Varsity yet! From the team competing to the dedicated supporters cheering us on to victory, everyone has been amazing and we are now already looking forward to winning Varsity 2019!”
Congratulations to all of the teams that took part – we hope all our athletes and supporters enjoyed the event.
