A generous donation has directly helped continuing studies into head and neck cancer, in particular cancers in the tonsil region of the mouth.

The cheque for £3,040 was given by Helen McGreavy, who made the donation in memory of Paul McGreavy who died of head and neck cancer at the University Hospital Aintree in 2009.

The funds will help further research by trainee surgeon Mr Andrew Schache under the supervision of Mr Richard Shaw and Mr Terry Jones from the Department of Molecular and Clinical Cancer Medicine.

It is hoped his research will provide insights into the way in which a Human Papillomavirus, HPV16 (part of the wart family of viruses) appears to cause cancer of the tonsil in an increasing number of individuals within Liverpool, but also across the United Kingdom and the broader developed world.
