The University of Liverpool is holding an open day for people to find out more about its Go Higher programme, a one year part-time study programme for those who have the ambition and ability to study for a degree but lack formal qualifications.

The Go Higher programme is the University’s award winning level 0 foundation course for mature students.  It offers a package of training to help develop the study skills, knowledge and confidence needed to pursue a University degree course.

Go Higher tutors and students who have completed the programme will be available at the Open Day to provide further information to anybody who wants to find out more about what the programme involves.

”It is designed to introduce students to learning as it happens in a University and to enable them to experience the real meaning of higher education. Students from this programme go on to do degrees and even PhDs here at Liverpool or at other universities.”

Go Higher has been running since 1999 and more than 500 students have successfully completed it. Students of all ages have taken part and the oldest student so far is 72 years old.

Those who have completed the programme have gone on to a wide range of degree courses including Sociology, Law, Archaeology,  Irish Studies, English , Politics, History, Popular Music, Business Studies and a number of participants have gone on to study for post graduate qualifications, including Masters and  PhDs.

Executive Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Andrew Derrington, said: “The Go Higher programme is a fantastic way for people who don’t have traditional qualifications or who have been out of education for a while to develop the confidence, skills and independence needed for degree-level study .

“It is designed to introduce students to learning as it happens in a University and to enable them to experience the real meaning of higher education. Students from this programme go on to do degrees and even PhDs here at Liverpool or at other universities.”
