Urban Affairs guru joins University

Professor Michael Parkinson

Urban Affairs expert, Michael Parkinson CBE, has been appointed as advisor to the Vice-Chancellor.

Professor Parkinson’s primary responsibilities will be to sustain and deepen the University’s engagement, influence and reputation at Liverpool city-region and European level.

Michael is an alumnus of our University and was a member of staff from 1967-1992.

Leading thinker

He has most recently been Director of the European Institute for Urban Affairs at LJMU, one of the most influential policy and research Institutes on urban affairs in the UK and Europe, which has significantly affected decision making at the highest Government level.

Michael has acted as adviser on urban affairs to the European Commission, OECD, EUROCITIES, the ESRC, Department of Communities and Local Government, the National Audit Office, the House of Commons Select Committees, the Core Cities and a range of cities in the UK.

The Minister for Cities, Greg Clark, described Michael earlier this month as “one of the world’s leading thinker about cities.” He has generated extensive research funding and has written more than 100 books, major reports and academic articles.

Michael said: “I am delighted to have been invited by the VC to build upon the University’s achievements in public engagement. I am particularly pleased to be returning to my alma mater. l love Liverpool and am looking forward to working with colleagues on tying the city and the University even closer together.”
