Radio 4’s Law in Action records in Liverpool

The University of Liverpool’s School of Law and Social Justice at the University of Liverpool hosted an edition of long-running BBC Radio 4 programme, Law in Action, presented by Joshua Rozenberg.

Airing on March 27, this edition focused on The Policing Debate and posed a number of fundamental questions.

How have stories like Hillsborough, Plebgate, undercover policing and the deaths of Mark Duggan and Ian Tomlinson affected public confidence in the police? Do the police have the right powers to do their job and do they use them as they should? Has the introduction of Police and Crime Commissioners in England and Wales helped to make the police more accountable? Can we trust the police?

These matters were debated by panel of experts in the setting of the university’s Moot Room. The panel comprised: Chief Superintendent Irene Curtis (Lancashire Constabulary and National President of the Police Superintendents’ Association of England and Wales), Nick Herbert MP (Conservative, Minister of State for Policing and Criminal Justice 2010-12), Chris Topping (Solicitor, Jackson and Canter, Liverpool) and Chief Constable Jon Murphy (Merseyside Constabulary).

Liverpool Law School‘s Dr Matt Gibson said: “The programme was a huge success and the School of Law and Social Justice, renowned for its research in crime and criminal justice, provided an ideal forum in which to engage with these challenging issues.”
