Can clothes combat air pollution?

Professor Anthony Ryan OBE from the University of Sheffield will discuss his research into the ecological application of nanoparticles as part of the University of Liverpool’s Science and Society lecture series.

Professor Ryan, who was awarded an OBE in 2006 for Services to Science, is working with fashion designer Helen Storey to develop a laundry additive called Catclo which sticks to the surface fibres of clothes and reacts with airborne nitrogen oxides to neutralise them.

The nanoparticles ‘eat up’ the toxic emission from cars, nitrogen oxides, which you can’t see or feel but which have been linked to breathing problems, such as asthma.

The lecture will take place at 5.30pm on Tuesday, 19 May 2015 in the Leggate Theatre at the Victoria Gallery and Museum (VG&M).

Admission is free but places must be booked in advance here: http://staging.liv.ac.uk/events/science-and-society/chemistry-and-fashion.php.
