Contemporary Art Society Study Day

Victoria Gallery and Museum

On 2nd February the Victoria Gallery and Museum will host a Contemporary Art Society Study Day which will explore ephemerality, preservation and other challenging issues involved with exhibiting artworks. The day will be free and will include lunch.

The `Post-Medium Collecting’ study day will focus on the New Perspectives exhibitions, a series of contemporary art commissions curated by Rose le Jeune that draw inspiration from rarely exhibited works from the VG&M collection.

Collecting the Ephemeral

The day will see curator Rose le Jeune and independent academic Dr Rebecca Gordon discuss issues that arise when setting new ephemeral and process-based artworks in dialog with historical artifacts, as is the case in the New Perspectives exhibition.

Talks from the artists

Also, there will be the unique opportunity to visit Phoebe Cummings’ Model for a Common Room together with the artist. Cummings will explain how she made the work entirely in raw clay and how it engages with the museum’s collection.

Later artist Ludovica Gioscia will speak about her Giant Decollages, architectural interventions created by layering numerous hand printed and custom wallpapers that get subsequently ripped back in order to reveal the strata underneath.

Sarah Elson’s ‘Launch Pad’

The day will conclude with a panel discussion with art historian and philanthropist Sarah Elson, who will talk about her project ‘Launch Pad’ as a new model for exhibiting artists in a domestic setting.

Sackler CPD Programme

The Sackler CPD Programme is the Subject Specialist Network for contemporary art. It focuses on the many issues that lie at the heart of our work in growing, sustaining and using public collections of contemporary art. It provides arts professionals with a national and international perspective on public collection development that will support their working lives.
