Successful HEE funding bid secures Genomics Education

A collaboration between the Universities Manchester and Liverpool has been chosen to deliver Health Education England’s (HEE) Masters programme in Genomic Medicine.

The University of Manchester tender was coordinated by Professor Phil Padfield and Dr Forbes Manson with input from the Greater Manchester NHS Genomic Medical Centre (GMC). In Liverpool, the bid was facilitated by Liverpool Health Partners (LHP), a partnership between the University of Liverpool and the Liverpool Trusts.  The collaboration between the Universities and the two GMCs in Manchester and Liverpool resulted in an outstanding proposal.

This North-West hub will join six other providers in the UK, thus reaffirming both institution’s positions as leaders in the field. Undoubtedly the underpinning research expertise was a large factor in winning the bid.

The programme is designed for learners who wish to develop specialist knowledge in Genomics. NHS staff can study free thanks to the HEE funding, and it is intended that their new knowledge will be applied in their clinical practice. Applications from science graduates are also encouraged. MSc, PgDip, PgCert and CPD options are available on a part time or full time basis.

Lynn Greenhalgh, NWC GHA Genomics Education Lead said: “It is great news that the two cities of Liverpool and Manchester have combined to deliver a world class MSc by utilising their strengths in this area via their Trusts, laboratories and universities. The collaboration uses flexible blended learning techniques specifically for busy healthcare professionals.”

Professor Phil Padfield, Associate Dean PGTE, Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, University of Manchester, added: “The collaboration between the Universities and GMCs provides a unique opportunity to deliver excellence; allowing us to move forward and lead the Genomic Medicine revolution in Healthcare.”
