Support and activities to help with loneliness

Students

Going to University can be a big change at any time, however with the challenging circumstances this year we realise that some of you may be feeling lonely or isolated from others.

If you’re feeling isolated, first it’s important to remember that you’re not alone. Feeling lonely is common at university, and with the social distancing guidelines that we need to follow, it might be more difficult at the moment to feel close to other people.

We’ve put together a round up of things you can do to help yourself if you’re feeling isolated, and support the University can offer to you, when and if you need it.

Ways to get involved

Although things are different this year, there are still plenty of ways, both virtually and face-to-face, to get involved and interact with your fellow students:

1. Guild events

The University and Liverpool Guild of Students have joined together to bring you a one-stop-shop of virtual events and activities – including activities specifically designed to give you the opportunity to meet your fellow students and have some fun:

The Guild have created their very own virtual Speed Mate-ing, to give you a helping hand in meeting new people, expanding your network and swiping right for your new best mate.

Through breakout rooms and conversation starters, you’ll have a chance to get to know the group and hopefully pick up some new pals along the way.

Whether you’re looking to make new friends or just want a bit of company, put time in your diary for a cuppa and a chat.

2. Get outdoors

If you’re not required to self-isolate, it is really important to take the time to get outside regularly for some fresh air and activity. This can be as simple as a quick walk or cycle, or grabbing a takeaway coffee for a walk and catch up with a friend. Remember, you can socialise outdoors with your household or one other person from another household.

Sport Liverpool have also created the following 1k, 2.5k and 5k walk/jog/run routes for you to try:

3. Come onto campus

If you fancy getting out from your room, campus is still open, with a few new measures, for you to enjoy.

The Courtyard in the Guild is open as a study space. You can also use the new click and collect takeaway service and tuck into all the burritos and topped fries treats you’d like. See the menu and order food for collection here.

4. Join a society

You can still join your existing or new society this term. Find out more here.

5. Volunteer

During lockdown you might find you’ve got a bit more time on your hands. Liverpool Guild of Students have teamed up with organisations across Liverpool to provide covid-safe volunteering opportunities. Find out more here.

Looking after your wellbeing

According to Mind’s webpage, loneliness can be associated with low mood, anxiety, and sleeping problems. As well as settling into the academic year and beginning to make connections with others, it’s important to look after your wellbeing. You could:
