Meet your new Guild Student Officers

Guild Officers 2022-23

In March this year you elected four Guild Student Officers – Vasiliki, Kathryn, Lina and Ella.

Now that they have settled into their roles we’ve been finding out more about them and what they hope to achieve over the next few months.

Vasiliki Samuels – Guild President

Over the next year Guild President, Vasiliki, will be proposing changes to the University’s Extenuating Circumstances Policy to widen self-certification and reduce the instances in which students would need to pay for a doctor note to support a claim. She is also hoping to expand bereavement leave to support students who lose somebody they are close to but who may be outside of their immediate family.

She is keen to ensure there is a permanent Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officer employed at Liverpool Guild of Students and will be working with the local bus companies and Liverpool City Council to discuss reintroducing the night bus to help students get home safely late at night.

Kathryn Manley – Deputy President

Kathryn intends to focus on helping students to manage the rising cost of living in partnership with Ella by campaigning for a reduction in rent costs and providing cheaper transport options for students.

She is also interested in helping to make Liverpool and the campus a safer place by working with the University on the disciplinary system, and with Liverpool City Council on licencing policy.

Kathryn is keen to improve the progression of students of colour to PhD level by identifying and dismantling the barriers they face when progressing into postgraduate research positions.

Lina Dubbins – Vice President

Vice President, Lina, is working alongside the University with the support of her fellow officers to campaign to decolonise the curriculum.

She also intends to focus on tackling sexual violence in UK universities and within the night time economy by supporting better consent training.

Mental Health and wellbeing is a key focus for Lina alongside the promotion of sexual and reproductive health.

She also hopes to increase the transparency of course costs for students by encouraging the University to lay out more clearly any additional costs which students may face such as field trips and course materials.

One of Ella’s key priorities will be to work with the University’s and Guild’s Sustainability teams to bring forward net zero goals.

Ella is also keen to build on previous commitments around ethical investments and will be working in partnership with Lina to campaign to decolonise the curriculum.

Ella intends to focus on helping students to manage the rising cost of living in partnership with Kathryn by campaigning for a reduction in rent costs and providing cheaper transport options for students.
