A message from your new Vice-Chancellor

This message from Vice-Chancellor Professor Tim Jones, has been sent to all students at the University.

Hello

Today is my first day as your new Vice-Chancellor and so, I would like to introduce myself and tell you a little more about what you can look forward to this term.

The first thing I want to say is how excited I am to be here. Like you, I was once a student at the University of Liverpool – I gained both my undergraduate degree and PhD here, albeit a very long time ago! A lot has changed since I studied here and as an alumnus, I have kept in touch and watched with interest as both the University and the city of Liverpool has changed considerably. To return as Vice-Chancellor is a huge honour and I am looking forward to getting to know our staff, student and alumni community and to getting to know the city again.

There are lots of exciting activities happening on campus, from our Feel Good February programme of free wellbeing events and activities which will be bigger and better than ever before, to the Guild of Students ‘Refreshers Fair’ in case you missed out at the start of the first semester or want to try your hand at something new. There will also be Lunar New Year celebrations soon and following the announcement that Liverpool has been named as the 2023 host city for the Eurovision Song Contest in May, we will be sharing ways in which you can get involved in this global event as valued members of the Liverpool community.

University life is exciting and full of opportunities but it can, of course, be challenging and stressful as well. As always, please remember that if you need direct help or support, the University can provide this – there is much more information about health and wellbeing, welfare and support available on the student intranet and the website of your Guild of Students.

You can expect to see me on campus a lot, visiting Schools and Departments and learning from staff about how the University works. I’ll also be meeting with your Guild Officers soon to talk about our shared priorities and the work we can do together. If you see me walking around the campus and I’m not in a tearing hurry, please feel free to stop me and say hello. Your feedback is so important and I will always make time to listen to students, to what you think is working well and what you would like us to do differently.

Universities are defined by the thousands of people who work and study in them and I am inspired every day by what we can achieve together. The University of Liverpool is a remarkable place and I am really delighted to be back. I am looking forward to getting to know our student community and I will be back in touch soon.

Best wishes

Tim
