Support services available for students

Student Services

Being at University is an exciting phase of your life where you will be meeting new people and new ideas. The whole student experience is designed to stretch you intellectually, academically and personally.

It will be challenging, but our Student Services team here to help if you need support while studying. You can get assistance with your studies, help with health and wellbeing, financial advice and more.

Mental Wellbeing

The University’s Wellbeing Team provides confidential, non-judgemental one-to-one support, information, advice and guidance. They can talk to you about a range of personal and social issues, helping you to improve your mental and physical wellbeing.

You can book a face-to-face session on campus or, if you prefer, via a video or telephone call from wherever you feel most comfortable.

The team run courses and workshops to provide you with ideas about different ways to manage and improve your mental and physical wellbeing.

Our Counselling Service is also available to students. The confidential, inclusive service can help you explore how you think, behave and feel about an issue and help you find appropriate ways to make changes in your life.

The Mental Health Advisory Service team support students with mental health difficulties during their time at the University of Liverpool. If you are experiencing a significant level of mental distress, we provide a range of evidence-based interventions that improve symptoms, functioning, quality of life and inclusion within the University community and beyond.

Self-help hub

The Student Services team have created a menu of self-help resources for a number of different topics including anxiety, depression, stress, imposter syndrome and sleep. The range of resources are designed to give you some ideas on what you can do to stop problems from escalating.

Disability Advice and Guidance

The Disability Advice and Guidance team supports both prospective and current students with a variety of differing needs. The team can assist with everything from campus accessibility and exam arrangements to assistive technology and inclusive resources.

They identify and recommend appropriate support provisions for disabled students, as well as assist those who think they may have a disability.

Money Advice and Guidance

Starting University and managing your money can be difficult. Our Money Advice and Guidance team understand that, and are here to offer advice and support to help you with any financial difficulties.

If you are in immediate financial difficulty and require support please contact the team at money@liverpool.ac.uk or book an online confidential one-to-one appointment.

International Student Support

The team offer advice for international students on all aspects of visas, travelling during your studies, and visits to the UK by family members. They can also help with information on working while studying and your options after graduation.

Reminder: How to get support if you need it

​Your school will have a Learning and Support Officer (LTSO) or a Student Experience team, and there are also academics attached to each department who can support you if you are struggling.

There is help available for Muslim, Jewish and Christian students through the Chaplaincy team. Independent advisors are available in the Guild, and Wardens and Residential Advisors if you are in University residence.

In a crisis now?

In an emergency, or if you don’t feel that you can keep yourself safe, go to accident and emergency (A&E), or call 999 for an ambulance. If you’re not in need of immediate medical treatment and unsure what the best option is for you, call NHS 111 who can advise you.

Many students find it helpful to call a listening service:

  • Samaritans– call 116123 (24 hours, 365 days a year)
  • Papyrus– call HopelineUK 0800 068 41 41 (9am-midnight, every day)

We also strongly recommend you see your GP as soon as possible.

If you have thoughts about harming yourself or ending your life but do not feel you are at immediate risk, Student Services offers a range of support that includes wellbeing advisors, counsellors, and the mental health advisory Service.
