University climbs nine places in Times Higher Education Impact Rankings

The University of Liverpool has been ranked among the world’s top 100 for its social, ecological and economic impact in the 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings for its work in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The rankings capture universities’ impact on society based on success in delivering the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across four broad areas: research, stewardship, outreach and teaching.

As a signatory of the SDG Accord, the University is committed to addressing the global challenges facing society and the environment today, by improving health and education, reducing inequality, ensuring economic sustainability, protecting our shared environment and its biodiversity and tackling climate change.

The Sustainability Team submitted evidence against all 17 UN SDGs for the first time this year, achieving an overall score of 89.5% and placing the University 79th out of 1,591 institutions globally, an increase of nine places from 2022.

Along with the overall score, the University is ranked against each of the SDGs individually and has secured top 50 positions for SDG16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions which was ranked 5th, SDG10: Reduced Inequalities which was ranked 33rd, SDG17: Partnerships for the Goals ranking 36th and SDG1: No Poverty, which was ranked 41st.

Kate Sisodia, Sustainability Communications and Engagement Officer, said “Submitting evidence to the Impact Rankings provides an opportunity to showcase the work being delivered to support the University’s Sustainability Strategy and Climate plan and allows us to demonstrate the differences we are making to the world we live in.”

Sustainability Programme Manager, Sally Shaw, explained “our results highlight the civic role of the University and demonstrate its major economic and social contribution to Liverpool City Region, and beyond”. She explained “We are pleased to have secured a top 100 position again this year and will continue to build our evidence base and strive for an even better score next year”
