Students running on campus

With free access to sports clubs from 23 September until 8 October at Sport Liverpool, you can try something new like sky diving or skiing, or try out for some team sports like basketball or rugby. Being part of a club gives plenty of opportunities to get involved in socials, competitions and events throughout the year.

Join the Sport Liverpool Team in the Sports Centre to this Thursday, 21 September, 10-6pm and Friday 22 September, 10-4pm, to meet members from over 50 clubs you can choose from.

Need some inspiration to get started? Here’s some ideas to help you give sport a go…

There are over 50 clubs at Liverpool for you to try and picking can be tough. Here’s 8 teams you might want to consider to start with – remember, there’s a whole range of clubs on offer so make sure you check out the full list here.

  • Badminton – There are plenty of opportunities to get involved with badminton during your time at university. This club welcomes players of all abilities and from all backgrounds, offering the flexibility to play at whatever level suits you, whether that be competitively or socially.
  • Clay pigeon shooting – Clay pigeon shooting tests your aiming skills to the max. You aim a shotgun at a clay disc as it is fired into the air. It offers an afternoon in the countryside alongside good company. It is a thrilling sport, open to all ages and abilities, which can become very addictive. Open to all, from complete beginners to competitive shots.
  • Football – There are plenty of opportunities to play football whilst you are at Liverpool. Male, female, indoor or outdoor on grass or on Astroturf; we have a wide selection to suit your needs. We are pleased to be an FA grassroots hub that provides all of these opportunities.
  • Golf – The University of Liverpool has been in partnership with Royal Liverpool Golf Club (host to the 2006 and 2014 Open Championship) for over 50 years. With our players gaining membership at the prestigious course, it is not difficult to see why many talented golfers are drawn to the University of Liverpool.
  • Karate – Karate is a student-led, all-ability club which means whether you have been training in karate for years or you have barely heard “wax-on, wax-off”, there’s a place for you in the club. In fact, 50% of the club’s members started karate at Liverpool.
  • Cheerleading & Dance – The Foxes are a collective of seven teams; six competitive and one non-competitive, (three dance & four cheerleading) offering a wide variety of styles and disciplines to suit all abilities. They pride ourselves on being a friendly, fun and inclusive club, regardless of experience and practice our title-winning routines throughout the academic year, all whilst improving fitness, flexibility, strength and team spirit. Foxes aim to compete in two to three national competitions each year, as well as competing at Varsity and Christie Cup.
  • Ski & Snowboarding – No matter your ability, from absolute beginner to total pro, LivSnow is the place for you to learn, improve or show off your skills on the slopes. With weekly training sessions, freestyle and racing comps, regular socials and student-run ski trips twice a year, the LivSnow society is the one to join.
  • Strength & Conditioning – The University of Liverpool Strength and conditioning club is dedicated to the pursuit of health, fitness and performance excellence; regardless of your sport or training background. Whatever your experience with a barbell we are committed to helping you achieve in competition and for members looking for a more casual experience we also offer women-only hypertrophy/aesthetics sessions and metabolic conditioning classes.

The competitive edge

If competing is your thing, many of the Sport Liverpool Teams offer competitive matches and meetings. Organised by BUCS (the governing body for higher education sport), weekly fixtures and events take place throughout the academic year as our teams travel and compete with other North West institutions. Fixtures usually take place on a Wednesday afternoon and events at weekends.

Varsity competition and Christie Championships

Varsity is a competition between University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moore’s University that has been running since 1993, and in 2023 Liverpool won for the eighth consecutive year.

Christie Championships is battle of northern Universities between Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester going back to 1886 making it one of the oldest inter-varsity competition after the Oxford-Cambridge battle. Can Liverpool retain their home title next year at Manchester?

Keep an eye out for more info and dates for this year’s competitions.
