Two new Liverpool Elements updates for greater visibility and efficiency

The University has announced two major updates to Liverpool Elements mean researcher web profiles can be more comprehensive than ever before. In combination, these two integrations will allow for a more extensive data flow, resulting in more discoverable research outputs and less time spent updating profiles.

All Liverpool staff involved in research should follow the guidelines below to enable them in their profiles.

Colleagues may notice new publications in their profiles – please only deposit them via Elements if they are available on an open access basis. More information and guidance can be found below.

Enable ORCID’s read and write function

By enabling this function, your research outputs uploaded to Elements will automatically populate your ORCID profile, saving you time and ensuring an up-to-date representation of your scholarly work. This integration not only enhances your visibility in the academic community but also streamlines the management of your research profile.

  1. Visit https://elements.liverpool.ac.uk/orcidsettings.html and log in if needed (or navigate to the main menu > Settings > ORCID Settings)
  2. If you have a linked ORCID ID, you can move to step #3. Otherwise, click on “Register or connect your ORCID ID” and sign into your ORCID account to link it
  3. Select ‘Read from and write publication data to my ORCID account’ and click “OK” when prompted.

Claim your Dimensions ID

Once set up, Liverpool Elements will have the capability to seamlessly integrate comprehensive publication data from Dimensions AI into its internal profiles. Furthermore, this data can be forwarded to ORCID, meaning broader dissemination for use in metrics, rankings, and other impactful endeavours, making your research reach further and be more discoverable.

  1. Visit https://elements.liverpool.ac.uk/publishingidentity.html and log in if required
  2. You may find that the system already suggests an ID for you under the section “Do these identify you?”. If so, please confirm whether the ID provided is correct or not.
  3. If the ID is incorrect or you have not been suggested one, click on the plus sign under “Add external profiles” and add your Dimensions ID (in the format: ur.XXXXXXXXXXXX.XX)
  4. Rectify inaccuracies in your Dimensions Researcher ID: If you notice any incorrect details in your Dimensions Researcher ID, kindly reach out to Dimensions’ Support Team for corrections at support@dimensions.ai, or access the support button on your profile page to request assistance.

Depositing new publications

How to identify open access material:

  • If a publication is Open Access (OA), then it is visible (often via an OA logo – usually an unlocked padlock symbol, or an Open Access statement/wording) on the publisher website.
  • Check the copyright/licensing and permissions on the article – does the publication state copyright, all rights reserved (and is therefore not open access)? If the publication has a Creative Commons licence (e.g. CCBY) it is open access.

Uploading files:

  • Due to copyright restrictions, please do not upload publisher PDFs unless the publication has been made open access. The publisher PDF will have the publisher’s logo and typesetting.
  • Instead, upload the Author’s Accepted Manuscript, which has none of the publisher formatting.

What’s to come: ORCID Affiliation Invitations

Staff, students and new technicians are being invited to grant the library permission to add rich metadata about the University of Liverpool to their profile. The next round of invitations will be sent in April. This initiative aims to ensure that other systems using persistent identifiers for organizations receive rich metadata, thereby enhancing data quality and impact.

If you experience any issues, you can reach out to the Liverpool Elements Team at elements@liverpool.ac.uk.
