Graduation July 2024: Everything you need to know

Graduates

We hope you’re so proud of everything you’ve achieved. To help make your day a special one, we’ve created this graduation checklist that covers everything you need to do before, during and after graduation. #LivUniGrad

Don’t forget, after 30 days (from your end date or graduation date; whichever is later) you won’t be able to access your University email address. So we can keep providing careers support and let you know about networking opportunities and your alumni benefits, update your contact details by completing this short form.

Before the day

  • Check your graduation itinerary email – you will receive this in the run up to your ceremony. Check where your ceremony will be held, as well as where to collect and return your gown.
  • Read our guide to academic dress so you know what you will be wearing on the day.
  • Make sure you know where your gown order confirmation is and bring it with you on the day of your ceremony.
  • Find out more about the official documentation you’ll receive.
  • If you are planning to drive, check out parking options. Parking on campus will be extremely limited on the day. The public multi-storey car park on Mount Pleasant is the largest nearby parking facility. See Liverpool City Council Parking for a list of city centre car parks.
  • Have guests who don’t have a ticket? Remember, you can stream all ceremonies on our website or on YouTube. Guests can also watch live ceremonies in The Courtyard within the Guild. Guests do not need a ticket to watch the streamed ceremonies on campus.

The University may have official photographers and videographers at Graduation. If you do not wish for your image to be taken, please notify the event staff (who will be wearing a blue gown) immediately.

On the day: Two to three hours before your ceremony

  • At least two to three hours before the start of your ceremony, head to the Sports Centre to be dressed by Ede & Ravenscroft in your gown.
  • You’ll also collect your tickets, Graduation brochure and certificate from the Sports Centre. You’ll get a free University of Liverpool bag to help keep everything safe.
  • Guests can relax in Guild Walk or wait in The Courtyard area within the Guild. There will be a number of food pop-ups around campus as well as the normal campus food outlets.
  • Before leaving the Sports Centre, make sure you collect your free University of Liverpool pin badge from our Alumni team.
  • If you have booked photography through Ede & Ravenscroft, your photos will be taken in the Sports Centre. If the queue is too long, pop back later but check with the Ede & Ravenscroft Sales Desk for closing times.
  • When leaving the Sports Centre, turn right onto Guild Walk and then turn right onto Oxford Street and walk to the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Israel / Gaza protest

We’d like to make you aware in advance of your return to campus that a small group of people are occupying the University’s Abercromby Square in relation to the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza. This follows similar events on university campuses in the UK and US over the past few months. The surrounding area and University buildings remain open and fully operational.

The University of Liverpool supports the right to participate in lawful, peaceful protest and we are monitoring the situation to minimise any disruption. As a University community we sincerely hope for an end to the violence and a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Israel and Gaza.

During your ceremony

  • Doors open one hour before the start of the ceremony. Make sure you allow time for security checks. It’s important you are seated at least 45 minutes before your ceremony begins.
  • When it is your turn to go on stage you will be directed by staff to the side of the stage in a continuous procession. Give your name to the officer at the foot of the ramp and then follow their instructions to proceed across the stage to have your degree conferred.
  • After being admitted, you should continue to walk across the stage and then go back to your seat as directed by the ushers.
  • Your ceremony lasts for around 90 minutes.
  • The moment you graduate will be captured in a personalised, shareable clip. Look out for an email from StageClip after graduation to download your special memory.

After your ceremony

  • Head to the Mountford Hall (in the Guild), Guild Walk, University Square or The Sphinx to celebrate. Your school or department might be throwing a celebration too. They’ll be in touch with you if they are having an event.
  • You’ll find deckchairs, swing seats and our UoL letters in University Square.
  • You might have noticed some of our buildings, like the beautiful Victoria Gallery and Museum, are having some work done. We know it’s really disappointing not to be able to get that iconic graduation shot in University Square, so we’ve created a green screen opportunity so you can take a photo with a virtual VG&M. We know it’s not perfect, but hopefully you can get some good shots to remember your special day. The green screen will be in University Square.
  • You will need to return your gown on the day of your ceremony to the The Street in the Guild. Please see our website for closing times.

Beyond graduation

Just because you have graduated doesn’t mean that you’re no longer a part of our University community. We value every single member of our alumni network and want to stay connected  in the years to come.

Here are three ways we want to stay connected in the future:

  • Make sure you update your contact details via the Alumni webpages to receive newsletters, event invitations, and the latest updates from the University. Don’t forget, after 30 days (from your end date or graduation date; whichever is later) you won’t be able to access your University email address, so you need to sign-up with an alternative email to avoid missing out.
  • Make sure you follow our Alumni team on Instagram, X, Facebook, YouTube, WeChat (利物浦Uni校友会) and join our LinkedIn group
  • Our Careers and Employability team can help you find an amazing role or help you apply for further study. To continue accessing the resources and support from the Careers & Employability team after graduation, complete this short online form to update your contact details. You can find out about all the careers support you can access on Student News.
