Recent events in our region: support for students and staff – message from the Vice-Chancellor

Victoria Building clock

The senseless violence against children in Southport last week sent shockwaves through our region and the entire country.  My thoughts are with the victims and their families as they attempt to come to terms with this unimaginable tragedy, and with the people of Southport.

The appalling rioting in some areas of the UK that has followed this horrific attack, is not representative of our city or our community. Racism and discrimination have no place in society and no place on our campus. We echo the words of Liverpool’s faith leaders, who have come together to call for peace and unity and together with our partner organisations in the city, we condemn this senseless violence in the strongest possible terms.

I have written to some of our civic partner organisations and to the Southport Learning Trust, who we work with on initiatives to widen participation in higher education, to offer the University’s support and assistance where we can most helpfully provide it. Colleagues in Libraries, Museums and Galleries have reached out to their city library counterparts, following the targeting of Spellow Lane Library Hub, to offer their support.

Student and staff support services

Please remember that a range of support is available for any member of our community who feels concerned during this time. The University’s Campus Support team works closely with Merseyside Police Liaison to ensure that our campus environment is safe and secure.  The University and the Guild of Students offer direct support to students in need, including a confidential report and support service. Any staff member in need of support can access our free and confidential Employee Assistance Programme and line-managers and HR Business Partners can offer advice on individual circumstances.
