Make friends and socialise at these university groups

University clubs and groups are fantastic ways to make friends and socialise. They’re lots of fun, and bring people with common interests together. There are a wide variety of opportunities for students, and so there’s something for everyone.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  1. Golf– The University of Liverpool has been in partnership with Royal Liverpool Golf Club for over 50 years. Players gain membership at the prestigious local course, so it is not difficult to see why many talented golfers are drawn to the University of Liverpool.
  2. Liverpool University Air Squadron – LUAS recruits new members at the start of the academic year. During term training nights take place at the Squadron’s Headquarters at RAF Woodvale near Southport, and there are week- long camps at Easter and over the summer. Flying training covers disciplines ranging from low level flying, aerobatics, and formation flying.
  3. Badminton– There are plenty of opportunities to get involved with badminton during your time at university. This club welcomes players of all abilities and from all backgrounds, offering the flexibility to play at whatever level suits you, whether that be competitively or socially.
  4. Cheerleading & Dance– The Foxes are a collective of seven teams: six competitive and one non-competitive, offering a wide variety of styles and disciplines to suit all abilities. They are a friendly, fun and inclusive club, regardless of experience. They practice their title-winning routines throughout the academic year, all whilst improving fitness, flexibility, strength and team spirit. Foxes aim to compete in two to three national competitions each year, as well as competing at Varsity and Christie Cup.
  5. UNIty Student and Staff Choir – A free, no audition choir, open to all. They meet every Wednesday evening in the Tung Auditorium. Please contact the choir director, Louise Ellinson, to find out more and be added to the mailing list ellinson@liverpool.ac.uk
  6. Sub-Aqua Club – This club offers two underwater activities, Scuba Diving and Underwater Hockey. Discover wreck diving for the history buffs, and marine reserves for the nature lovers, or try Underwater Hockey which is a fast-paced sport invented by scuba divers, so it’s rather niche – think gamified freediving!
  7. University Officers’ Training Corps – LUOTC offers a unique experience to university students looking to challenge and develop themselves, make life-long friends while also getting paid. You’ll receive internationally recognised military and leadership training along with the opportunity to immerse yourself in a variety of sports and adventurous training activities. The training is designed to fit around your academic commitments.
  8. Korfball – The world’s largest mixed-gender ball sport that you’ve probably never heard of! It’s similar to basketball and netball with a few different rules, and features mixed teams. They play competitively in British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS), and also in the Christie Cup, plus three Sunday league teams in the North West Korfball League.
