WriteFest 2025 kicks off on the 3rd of November and lasts for the whole of November. This is our annual celebration of academic writing, aimed at supporting researchers in developing their writing practice.
Throughout November, there are workshops, webinars, writing retreats, and resources available to researchers at any stage.
Departments from across the University have contributed to a packed and innovative programme.
Develop your writing skills
With events almost every day throughout November, there’s something for all researchers, from postgraduate students (PGRs) through to professors.
WriteFest sessions cover a variety of topics and audiences, including:
- Writing (and reading) for impact – Learn how your reading can help your writing, how to overcome writer’s block, how to write policy briefings, and how to write effective abstracts.
- Writing tools – Learn about AI tools, Endnote, and DMPonline.
- Writing for careers – There are sessions on both CVs and cover letters for PGRs, as well as a narrative CV clinic.
- Data and writing – Discover best practices for research data management, learn more about FAIR principles and open data, and think critically about data.
- Research staff – Attend the RSA Lunch & Learn on writing strategies and develop your publication strategy.
- PGRs – Reflect on the mechanics of academic writing, develop effective writing habits, and attend stage-specific sessions for mid-stage and late-stage PGRs.
- Supervisors – Help your PGRs develop as academic writers.
In addition to these live sessions, the Writing Resources Wakelet has over 40 separate writing-related resources for you to explore, including recordings, blogs, podcasts, playlists, and self-directed learning activities.
Time and space to write
Find time and space to complete your writing tasks at our variety of writing retreats.
Throughout WriteFest 2025, there are regular 2-hour ‘Shut Up and Write’ retreats. Every Wednesday there is a hybrid option (join online or come in-person), while every Friday there is a virtual writing retreat. Join the ‘Shut Up and Write’ Teams group here.
The Research Staff Association’s day-long writing retreat is open to all staff on Wednesday 19th November, with structured writing sessions, thematic discussions, and support.
For PGRs, there is a PGR-specific writing retreat on Tuesday 4th November.
