University rugby players shine on the Championship stage

Student Rugby players

Huge congratulations to four of our student Rugby Union stars who are making their mark at the Championship level!

Recently, Matthew Rabbette, Callum Butler, and Freddie Stevenson stepped up for Caldy RFC. Their selection is yet another testament to the University of Liverpool’s strong ties with Caldy, who also provide invaluable coaching support for our Rugby Union club.

Meanwhile, Marion “Maz” Ridgway continues to dominate! A driving force behind our Women’s Rugby team’s success in the Premier North League, Maz is also shining at the highest level of English women’s rugby with Sale Sharks—an incredible achievement!

Special recognition must go to Matthew Rabbette, who not only plays championship rugby but also coaches our women’s team—all while balancing his medical studies. A truly outstanding commitment to the sport!

University of Liverpool Sport Development Manager Stuart Wade praised their efforts, saying: “Being selected for Caldy and Sale’s first teams is a phenomenal achievement. It’s a testament to their dedication, talent, and hard work. We’re incredibly proud and wish them continued success!”

With our university rugby teams thriving and BUCS competitions back in full swing after the winter break, the stage is set for even more success.
