Student shines at BUCS track cycling championships

Student Cyclist

We are thrilled to celebrate the outstanding success of one of our student Performance Athletes, Lucy Nelson, at the BUCS Track Cycling Championships.

Lucy delivered a phenomenal performance, bringing home multiple medals and setting new records for the University of Liverpool, including;

  • Women’s Elimination – Gold (National Champion)
  • Women’s Points Race – Gold (National Champion)
  • Women’s Kilo – Silver
  • Women’s Team Championship – Bronze
  • Women’s Individual Pursuit – 6th Place

Lucy’s remarkable efforts earned Liverpool 42 BUCS points, an extraordinary achievement that surpasses the total that most teams accomplish in an entire season!

Even more impressively, she secured a bronze medal in the team category as a solo competitor—an incredible accomplishment she has now earned a second time, after first achieving it in 2023.

With 12 BUCS medals to her name, including four National Champion titles, Lucy is officially the most decorated BUCS athlete in Liverpool’s history.

Her journey is even more inspiring considering she had retired from cycling before joining the university. After a surprise bronze in 2021 following just two weeks of training, Lucy reignited her passion and has since excelled at both national and international levels.

Beyond BUCS, Lucy has earned national medals in the Durney discipline, silver at the prestigious Six Days of Bremen, and recently signed with Smurfit WestRock UCI Continental Team as their lead sprinter. As she prepares to graduate from her master’s programme this year, Lucy is set to transition into a full-time professional cycling career.

Congratulations, Lucy—your dedication, resilience, and record-breaking success are an inspiration to us all!
