Freshers, second-years, postgrads—no matter where you are in your student journey, there’s one thing that can really make your university experience richer: getting involved in a society.
At the Guild, there are dozens of groups waiting for you to jump in, make friends, learn something new—and have fun while doing it.
What societies give you
Community and friendship
It’s a powerful feeling to walk into a room and already know someone, or even better, to make new friends who share your interests. Whether it’s music, drama, anime, sports, politics or something totally niche, societies bring people together.
Skills beyond the lecture hall
Running events, organising socials, public speaking, leadership, team work—these are skills you’ll use long after your time at university. Joining a society gives you a chance to try them in a relatively low-stakes, high-reward way.
Relaxation, passion and fun
If all you ever do is lectures and essays, you’ll burn out. Societies are a great way to unwind, follow your passion, and try something new without fear of failing.
A boost to your CV
Employers like to see that you did more than just attend lectures. Being involved in clubs/societies shows initiative, commitment, and often leadership. It’s proof you can juggle responsibilities and thrive in a team.
What’s on offer at the Guild
At the Guild, there are tons of societies. Some are academic, some creative, some sport-oriented, some purely social; many are somewhere in between. You’ll find:
• Societies for specific subjects (law, engineering, etc.) that help with networking and academic support
• Cultural and international groups, giving space to celebrate heritage, share traditions, and learn from one another
• Hobbies and passion-based societies—music, dance, film, gaming, creative writing…
• Social / political / campaign groups that allow you to make change, debate current issues, or volunteer in the community
If one doesn’t exist that fits you, you could even start your own! That’s how some of the most exciting, unique groups begin!
