For the second year in a row, the University of Liverpool has five subjects in the world’s top 50 in the 2025 edition of the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS).
The Shanghai Rankings Consultancy, also responsible for the Academic Ranking of World Universities, has placed the University of Liverpool in the world top 50 in the following GRAS subject areas:
- Veterinary science: 32nd (3rd in the UK)
- Management: 28th (2nd in the UK)
- Business administration: 32nd
- Geography 44th
- Law: 46th
A variety of subject areas across the University also ranked within the top 100 in the world including:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Civil Engineering (5th in the UK)
- Oceanography
- Public Health
- Communication (5th in the UK)
- Transportation Science
The tables are built on five indicators: World-Class Faculty, World-Class Output, High Quality Research, Research Impact and International Collaboration.
This success follows the University maintaining its position in Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). More than 2500 universities are ranked by ARWU every year and the best 1000 in the world are published. The 2025 table places Liverpool at 101-150 in the world, and 9-12 in the UK.
Vice Chancellor Professor Tim Jones said: “This latest global recognition for a varied range of University of Liverpool subjects is great to see, and testament to our outward looking, globally connected community of staff and students. It is particularly pleasing to see a number of subjects including Law, Business Administration, Management and Geography rise by several places in this year’s ranking, a testament to colleagues’ work to continually improve our provision.”
