In memoriam – Colonel James Graeme Bryson

Bryson with VC

The Vice-Chancellor with Colonel Bryson

The University regrets to report the death of Colonel James Graeme ‘Paddy’ Bryson OBE, a University of Liverpool graduate (LLB Hons 1932, LLM 1935) and Honorary Doctor of Laws 2011.

He was a former Commanding Officer whose distinguished career as a soldier has been complemented by an equally steadfast commitment to public office as a solicitor, a judge, one of Her Majesties Commissioners of Taxes, Chairman of the Medical Appeal Tribunal, and Chairman of the Lord Mayor’s Poppy Fund.

As one of the oldest living graduates of this University, he was a former President of the Liverpool Law Society, and continued to retain a strong commitment to the Institution as both a generous benefactor and a Friend of the University.

He received the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery after being shot at in court during a Bankruptcy trial. And among the numerous awards and titles which he received during 70 years of public service, he was made a Citizen of Honour in 2009 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to both the University and the City.

There will be a Memorial Service for Colonel Bryson at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King on Sunday 25 November at 3pm. All welcome.
