Update on July 2021 graduation ceremonies

The earliest date on which Government restrictions for large events might be lifted is 21 June 2021, four weeks before our graduation ceremonies would usually take place.

With these dates fast approaching, we still do not know what restrictions may apply to both staging large indoor events and to travel for the thousands of you who would be coming to Liverpool from all corners of the UK and around the world.

Therefore, in common with many other universities, we have made the difficult decision to postpone in-person ceremonies due to take place this summer.

We know that after a hard year this is not the news you hoped to receive but we remain determined to hold in-person ceremonies, safely and in line with any Government regulations, at the earliest opportunity.

Accordingly, we are now making plans to invite you to attend a ceremony on campus in Liverpool during the 2021-22 academic year. Our aim is to begin these events as early as this autumn, with dates spread throughout the next academic year. If your graduation ceremony was due to take place this July, we will be in touch with further details as soon as we are able.

Virtual celebration

Whilst we hope to see you in Liverpool for an in-person celebration at a later date, we are also making plans to mark your achievement at the time you will officially graduate this July.

All students who meet their degree requirements will be invited to attend a Class of 2021 online celebration this summer. These will be live events, held online on Friday 23 July. We will be in touch with more details soon.

 In-person ceremonies

By 21 June 2021, we will have a better understanding of what the Government’s roadmap may mean for indoor mass events and travel to the UK from overseas. We will be reviewing the information closely and will write to you again with more detail as soon as possible about our plans for celebrations on campus after that date. Our aim will be to give you at least two months’ notice of any planned graduation event to ensure that you have time to make the arrangements if you wish to attend.

Remember, you will lose access to your University email address shortly after your original graduation date (July 2021), so please make sure you update your contact details by registering for an alumni account.

Your award certificate

Students who complete their degree requirements will formally graduate ‘in absentia’ in July. You will be able to access and share digital versions of your award documentation following your virtual graduation and your award certificate will be sent to you via post.

Information for students studying a clinical course

If you are studying a clinical course, we are exploring the best route of enabling you to take your professional oath and information will be shared on this through your School as soon as possible.
