Reminder: University Hardship Fund open for applications

The University Hardship Fund 2021/22 is now open for applications.

The fund, which is available to support students experiencing financial difficulties, is open to UK, international and EU undergraduate and postgraduate students.

It is administered by the Money Advice and Guidance Team at the University and is intended to help students to deal with ongoing financial issues as well as one-off unexpected costs. There are two types of award:

  • Standard awards – which are made in cases where income isn’t sufficient to cover basic allowable living costs
  • Non-standard awards – which can be made in cases where a student has had an unexpected cost during the year that could not have been foreseen

The fund cannot consider help towards tuition fees in any cases.

Please also note that UK students whose parents’ income has been affected by Covid-19 can apply to Student Finance England (SFE) to be reassessed.

Awards from the fund are normally made on a grant basis and are therefore non-repayable.

Guidance is available to help you decide whether or not to make an application.

If you decide to apply, the Money Advice and Guidance Team will look over your income and expenditure and advise you on any student loans, grants or other income you may be entitled to before assessing if your application to the hardship fund has been successful.

The application process is now open and you can apply anytime between now and the closing dates of 6 May 2022 for undergraduate students and 15 July 2022 for postgraduate students.

Applications normally take 20 working days to process (providing all documentation is provided to support your application), but at busy times the assessment may take longer, so it is important to apply in good time if you are experiencing financial hardship.

Further information about how to apply to the University Hardship Fund is available on our webpages.
