5 things you can do now to help your future career

No matter what stage you’re at in thinking about life after graduation, here are five quick things you could do right now to help get yourself career ready.

1. Drop-in to the Career Studio

Our innovative, award-winning Careers and Employability team do things differently to other universities. We are dedicated to helping you take control of your future.

At the heart of our careers support is the Career Studio. This is a space led by students, for students, empowered by career experts. Whether you have your heart set on a particular career, or don’t know where to start, our dedicated and highly trained Career Coaches are here to help you.

They can check your application before you click submit, prepare you for an interview, and support you through all stages of the recruitment process. If you not sure what you want to do after graduation, or need some assistance finding the right opportunities, they can help you to explore your career options and plan some next steps.

The Career Studio is open Monday to Friday from 10am-5pm and there’s no need to make an appointment.

2. Get involved with Love Liverpool Week

Next week the Careers and Employability team are hosting a series of employer Love Liverpool focussed events on campus that will shine a light on the many amazing opportunities in the local area.

Look out for our employer showcases all week to make connections and find out about job opportunities for students and graduates. On Wednesday 14 February make sure to visit the part-time jobs fair in the Guild, as well as the graduate entrepreneurs on Guild Walk and stands on University Square with employers who are all looking to recruit students for their Liverpool based opportunities.

3. Make the most of Handshake

Handshake is the University of Liverpool platform for everything careers related. It’s available for you to use throughout your time with us and beyond.

If you’re not done so already, claiming your account is easy and can be done in less than 60 seconds. Activate your account and you’ll benefit from:

  • Exclusive jobs: part-time, internship, placement & graduate roles
  • Access to exclusive careers events
  • Virtual 1-to-1 chats with employers
  • Career resources to help explore, connect and apply
  • Access to the Career Studio ‘send a message’ service
  • The opportunity to read employer reviews and connect with your peers

If you’re already on Handshake make sure to complete your profile so that you’re more likely to see the jobs and events you’re interested in, and our employer partners can reach out to you directly with exclusive invitations and new job opportunities.

4. Develop your digital skills

Last semester, our team of Digital Coaches delivered over 40 Digital Skills workshops for students, ranging from generative AI to utilising creative toolkits such as Canva.

We are excited to announce that our Digital Skills Sessions are back for Semester Two, and are available to book via Handshake. Places are limited so register now to make sure you don’t miss out.

5. Update your CV

Your CV is often the first chance you get to make a good impression with a potential employer, so it’s important to take the time and effort to get it right.

That’s why we’ve teamed up with CareerSet to offer a brand-new online resource for University of Liverpool students that enables you to:  

  • Score and improve your CV via personalised, actionable feedback;
  • Target your CV to specific job descriptions, based on keywords and skills;
  • Enhance your cover letter via core checks and relevancy checks.

 You will also find useful resources on CareerSet, such as CV templates and cover letter templates.
