Wellbeing support and resources

The re-sit assessment period can be a particularly stressful time, but if you feel you are suffering from more than a bout of exam nerves, then extra support is available. You don’t need to struggle on your own, and the following services and resources are free and confidential for all students.

Student Support Services

Student Services offer comprehensive advice, support and information on a wide range of non-academic issues including:

  • Counselling Service
  • Mental Health Advisory Service
  • Advice and Guidance
  • Disability Advice and Guidance
  • International Advice and Guidance
  • Money Advice and Guidance

Student Services are based in the Alsop Building on University Square. There are also facilities across campus, including Brownlow Health GP service.

The Student Services web pages contain lots of information, including Study Support and Self-Help Guides. You can also access the online booking system to arrange a confidential one-to-one appointment.

Health Assured: 24/7 student assistance

Health Assured offer students a free, confidential advice line, with help available to talk through any problem, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Qualified counsellors and advisors understand the pressures of student life, and are there to help anyone who needs it. Sometimes, simply talking through your issues with someone, in the moment, can be a great relief.

You can call the 24/7 helpline for free on 0800 028 3766.

Students can also access holistic health and wellbeing support through the Student Assistance Programme with the My Healthy Advantage app.

The app can be downloaded free from Google Play or the App Store and you can find more details about how to log in on our webpages.

KnowHow workshops

The KnowHow team provide online academic support to help you to succeed in your studies. Find online tutorials on Canvas, or book a place at on one of the KnowHow workshops and webinars for help with preparing for assessments, advice on answering essay questions, developing time management strategies, note taking, statistics, critical reading, and academic integrity.

Self-help hub

The Student Services team have created a menu of self-help resources for a number of different topics including anxiety, depression, stress, imposter syndrome and sleep. The range of resources are designed to give you some ideas on what you can do to stop problems from escalating. Have a look and you may find an answer to your concern. Student Minds

Student Minds is the UK’s student mental health charity. The charity empowers students and members of the University community to look after their own mental health, support others and create change.

Their website has a range of resources, including a guide on exam stress, and mental health and wellbeing.

Wellbeing reading list

The Library have created a full wellbeing reading list that includes everything from Mindfulness and meditation to Personal growth and skills development.

All accessible through the University library online.

In a crisis now?

If you are on campus and feel unsafe, call campus support on 0151 794 2222 and they will come to support you.

In an emergency, or if you don’t feel that you can keep yourself safe, go to accident and emergency (A&E), or call 999 for an ambulance. If you’re not in need of immediate medical treatment and unsure what the best option is for you, call NHS 111 who can advise you.

Many students find it helpful to call a listening service:

  • Samaritans call 116123 (24 hours, 365 days a year)
  • Papyrus call HopelineUK 0800 068 41 41 (9am – 10pm weekdays, 2pm – 10pm at weekends and on bank holidays)

We also strongly recommend you see your GP as soon as possible.
