Support for students affected by events in the Middle East

We understand that recent events in the Middle East will be deeply concerning and upsetting for many of our students, especially those with links to the region and our thoughts are with everyone who is affected.

Our International Advisers in our International Advice and Guidance (IAG) team have contacted both Israeli and Palestinian students to outline the support we can offer them. We also know that many other students will have strong links to the region, and may be concerned about the emerging situation. If you find yourself in this situation, please do reach out to us for the support we can offer you as outlined below.

Student support

  • Our team of Wellbeing Advisors are here to provide support or someone to talk to if you need it. Get in touch by emailing advice@liverpool.ac.uk.
  • You may also find our year-round wellbeing resources and self-help information useful to read.
  • Support from your friends and the wider student community can be helpful and we encourage you to reach out to those around you. Peer-to-peer support can be accessed via The Liverpool Guild of Students’ student societies or student communities, many of which are based around nationality and culture.
  • If you find that the current crisis is affecting your ability to carry out your studies, please do contact your School Office so that they can support you with this.
  • The University has a number of Chaplains and Associate Chaplains who provide pastoral care to students across all faith groups. You can find more information on how to get in touch with this service on the chaplaincy webpage.

All of this information can also be found on our global crises support page.

Please remember that the support outlined above is also available to you if you have affected by other global conflicts, natural disasters and humanitarian crises such as the recent earthquake in Afghanistan.

Report + Support

We would like to remind everyone of the importance of mutual respect, understanding and tolerance at this difficult and distressing time. As part of our commitment to creating a safe, inclusive environment for you to study and live in, we encourage you to report anti-Semitism or any other form of racism, harassment or intimidation to the University. Our online Report and Support tool can be used confidentially to raise any concerns you have. We want to remind all students that these types of behaviour will not be accepted by the University.

Update on support available (published 16 November 2023)

In addition to the above networks for students, the following support has now been introduced more widely for university students:

Health Assured

Health Assured has set up a free, dedicated University helpline, in partnership with Endsleigh, to support anyone who is struggling with their mental health as a result of ongoing events in the Middle East. Please call 0800 783 8390.

CST and MAMA

If any student has been affected by faith-based hate, there is help available:

CST is a charity that protects the Jewish community from antisemitism.

MAMA is an independent support service for those who face anti-Muslim hatred and prejudice, if you have witnessed or experienced any incident(s) that need reporting.
