Here are eight sport clubs at Liverpool that might catch your eye this year whether you’re totally new to the sport or have some experience already:
🎯 Archery
Looking for a sport that combines focus, calm, and precision? Archery challenges your mental discipline as much as your physical steadiness. It’s ideal if you like individual effort, self-improvement, and a quiet environment to practise in.
Never done archery before? No problem! all skill levels. Whether you want to meet new people and enjoy a social sport or compete to the best of your ability, archery could be the sport for you.

If you’re after a high-intensity workout and want to build strength, speed, and resilience, boxing might be for you.
The Liverpool University Amateur Boxing Club is a large and experienced club that trains at a professional boxing gym, producing award-winning boxers. Whether you’re looking to compete or improve your fitness, this boxing club is for you.
🤸 Gymnastics
Gymnastics offers a full-body workout, improving flexibility, balance, strength, and coordination. Whether you’re new to floor work, beams, or tumbling, there’s a pathway to develop skills progressively.
We are a fun, friendly, and inclusive club open to all students aged 18+ across Liverpool with any level of ability so whether you’re stepping onto the mat for the first time or have years of training under your belt, we offer expert coaching, a range of competitions, and a supportive community where everyone is welcome.
🥋 Judo
Judo is a martial art focused on throws, holds, and grappling. Beyond the physical challenge, it builds respect, discipline, and tactical thinking.
We are a student-led, all-ability club sporting a diverse range of members. We are welcome to all; regardless of whether you’re a seasoned veteran with years of experience, or complete beginner to martial arts, you will find something for you.
🚣 Rowing
Rowing is a superb full-body endurance sport. It emphasizes teamwork (in multi-person boats) and individual effort (in singles). We provide a fun and accessible way of joining the sport in which we will teach you from the ground up how to row.
Anyone and everyone are welcome to come down and try it out! If you show passion and commitment throughout the learning process, you will have the opportunity to race across the country! Our learn to row programme is one of the best in the nation, boasting many medals and high placing results in recent years.
🎾 Tennis
Tennis is flexible: you can play singles, doubles, competitively, or just for fun. It’s a great social sport and helps with agility, reaction time, and fitness.
Tennis at the University of Liverpool features a huge programme, with weekly sessions available for players of all standards. Our team of incredible student coaches provide all you need in order to improve your game, ranging from beginners coaching through to intermediate and everything in between.
🏐 Volleyball
Volleyball is brilliant if you like fast-paced, team-based sports. It encourages communication, reaction speed, and tactical awareness.
Whether you are a complete beginner curious to try a new sport or an experienced player who’d like to play competitively, our volleyball club is the right place for you, full of people to share your passion with. We pride ourselves on being a diverse and welcoming club with members from all across the globe. We are very inclusive of players with different abilities and will offer you the opportunity to improve your skills wherever you start.
🤽 Water Polo
Want something a bit different? Water polo combines swimming, ball skills, and tactical play. It’s intense and demanding but offers a unique challenge. If you’re a confident swimmer and enjoy physical, dynamic tasks in a team setting, this could be your sport.
The University of Liverpool Water polo club is a great place for beginners or those wishing to compete at the highest level. We pride ourselves on our performances in the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) league, as well as our regular socials. We are a performance sport at the University of Liverpool with members playing for Wales, England and other Nations.
Competing & Events
Many of these clubs compete under BUCS (the governing body for university sports), so you’ll have the chance to take part in weekly fixtures and weekend events. Keep an eye out, matches often fall on Wednesday afternoons or at weekends.
Varsity competition and Christie Championships
Varsity is a competition between University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moore’s University that has been running since 1993, and in 2023 Liverpool won for the eighth consecutive year.
Christie Championships is battle of northern Universities between Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester going back to 1886 making it one of the oldest inter-varsity competition after the Oxford-Cambridge battle. Can Liverpool retain their home title next year at Manchester?
